Myanmar officially (the Republic of the Union of Myanmar) also known as Burma, is a sovereign country located in the Southeast Asia. Myanmar is bordered by India and Bangladesh to the west, Thailand and Laos to the east and China to the north. To the south, about one third of Myanmar's total perimeter of 5,876 km forms an uninterrupted coastline of 1,930 km along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. According to the national census in 2014, the population is over 51 million. Myanmar has 676,578 square kilometers (261,228 square miles) in size. Its capital city is Naypyitaw (new royal seat of king) and former capital was Yangon (Rangoon); largest commercial city in Myanmar. Myanmar has been officially a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) since 1997.

Early people in Myanmar included the Tibeto-Burman-speaking Pyu city-states in the Upper Burma and the Mon kingdoms in Lower Burma. In 9th century ago, the Burma people came to the upper Irrawaddy valley and, following the establishment of the Pagan Kingdom in 1050s, the real Burmese language, culture and Theravada Buddhism slowly became influent in the country. The Pagan Kingdom was dethroned due to the invaders Mongol (skillful horse-warriors in Asia) and numerous warring states emerged. In the 16th century, reunited by the Taungoo Dynasty, in this period, the country was the largest empire in the history of Mainland Southeast Asia. In the early 19th century, Konbaung Dynasty ruled over country-wide areas briefly Manipur and Assam as well in the north-west. The British conquered the sovereignty of Myanmar after three Anglo-Burmese Wars till the late 19th century and the country was colonized the British. Myanmar was independent country in 1948, as a democratic nation.
